English language has two types of articles: the indefinite article a/an and the definite article the.
The indefinite article a/an is used with countable nouns and means 'one'. For example, 'a dog' means one dog.

Let's learn the following examples:
  • Nick has got a laptop = Nick has got one laptop.
  • Kolya is waiting for a tram = Kolya is waiting for one tram.
  • It is a good book = It is one good book.
The indefinite article has two forms. They are: a and an. The indefinite article an is used before the vowel sounds like: a / e / i / o / u. For example: an ant, an egg, an idea, an orange, an uncle.
When h is not pronounced, you may use an. For instance: say 'an hour' not a hour.
Of course, there are exceptions for the words like: a university, a Europe.
If you talk about jobs you should use a/an: a teacher, a doctor,an actor, an engineer etc.
You can use a/an before adjectives + nouns: a nice day, a good person, a little boy, an interesting book, a green ball etc.

a = one:
  • I would like a cup of tea.
  • John works in a bank.
  • I have got a question.
  • When Mahmud was a child, he liked riding bicycle.
  • Tokyo is a large city.
an:
  • Mr. Smith and Mrs. Smith live in an old house.
  • An ant is not an animal. It is an insect.
  • This is an interesting article.
  • This is an umbrella.
with jobs:
  • I am a doctor.
  • My friend is an engineer.
  • Susan is a bank clerk.
  • Ahmed is a student.
